Going in a new direction

When I started developing and conceiving this game, it began with the concept of a person navigating a cave system with little to no light. The cave would offer its supernatural guidance via temperamental glowing rocks. The 2-D-ness of it came from my assertion at the time that it would be easier to develop and more fitting for the concept. While both are probably true, there’s no reason for me to permanently bind myself into this decision.

Using Unreal Engine for 2-D has been fun and, to be honest, I like it much more than Unity. That said, I can’t help but feel the allure of the super powerful 3-D engine at my disposal. After some thinking, I’ve decided to shift my prototype to a first-person 3-D exploration adventure. UE5 offers great tools for modeling, which will allow me to greybox level concepts without having to learn a new program like Blender. I learned so much developing the prototype for 2-D, and I know I will be able to carry these lessons over to 3-D development.

The first-person perspective will also help with conveying the feeling of being lost and claustrophobic in the cave. I very much look forward to diving into the world of 3-D. This project, after all, is for me. I have no delusions about the insane amount of competition in the indie game market. At the end of the day I want to have fun learning new things.

Thanks for sharing this journey with me.
